In short
WakeFlow is an alarm app that works on your phone. There is no account, no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and we never sell or share your data for advertising. Your alarms, mornings, sleep, routines and places are stored only on your phone. A few optional features need an online service — they are off until you turn them on, and this page lists exactly what each one sends, to whom, and for how long it is kept.
Who is responsible
This policy covers the WakeFlow app for Android (package ai.wakeflow.app) and WakeFlow’s server. WakeFlow is made by an independent developer based in Belgium, who is the data controller. You can reach the developer through "Send feedback" in Settings, or by the contact email shown on WakeFlow’s Google Play page.
Stored only on your phone
This information is kept in the app’s private storage on your phone. We cannot see it, and it is not sent anywhere unless you use one of the optional features below.
- Your alarms: times, days, sounds, backgrounds, challenges, routines and settings.
- Your morning history: when the alarm rang, snoozes, when you got up, left and arrived, and how long each step took — used to learn your real routine and travel time.
- Sleep: bedtimes, wake-up times, sleep scores and your sleep goal.
- Places: your Home and other places you chose on the map, with their addresses.
- Your first name, your timetable, the friend you chose for an alarm (name and number), and your own sounds and photos.
- Overnight notifications from the apps you picked (see below) — kept for at most 24 hours.
Permissions and why we ask
Android asks you before most of these are used, and WakeFlow explains each one first. You can refuse or withdraw any of them in Android’s settings; the alarm keeps working.
- Alarms and reminders, full-screen notifications, display over other apps, wake lock, vibration, starting after a restart: so your alarm rings on time, over the lock screen, even after the phone restarts. Display over other apps is only used by the optional lock mode.
- Notifications: to show the alarm, reminders and your morning routine.
- Background services ("media playback" and "health"): to keep the alarm sound and sleep sounds playing with the screen off, and for Smart wake to read the motion sensor in the last minutes before your alarm.
- Location (precise or approximate, only while you use the app): to set your Home with "Use my current location" and to get the weather. WakeFlow does not track your location in the background.
- Calendar: to read today’s events for your morning summary (only the calendars you choose). WakeFlow does not change your calendar.
- Notification access: to collect overnight messages and missed calls from the apps you pick, for your morning summary. Nothing from other apps is kept.
- Usage access: to see when your screen was off at night (to estimate your sleep) and your phone time after waking. Read on your phone only, never sent.
- Physical activity and motion sensors: for the steps challenge and Smart wake.
- Camera: only to scan your wake-up code. No pictures are taken or kept.
- Do Not Disturb access: for the optional quiet hours from bedtime until your alarm.
- Contacts: WakeFlow has no access to your contacts. When you pick a friend, Android’s own picker gives the app only the one number you choose.
Features that use the internet
Each of these is optional. Data is sent over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), only for that feature, and is not used to identify you, for advertising, or to train AI models.
- AI summary, overnight message digest, weekly report and "plan in words" (only after you allow AI): the text needed for that answer — for example today’s plan, the notifications from your chosen apps, or the sentence you typed — goes to WakeFlow’s server, which sends it to Google Cloud’s AI (Gemini on Vertex AI, in Belgium) to write the answer. The answer is sent back to your phone. Neither WakeFlow’s server nor the app stores this text, and Google does not use it to train its AI.
- “Plan it with AI” (making an alarm from your sentence): besides the sentence, the app sends the phone’s local date and time, the names and kinds of your saved places (for example “HoGent — university”; never addresses or coordinates) and one number about your mornings (your average snoozes), so the suggestion fits you. Nothing is saved until you tap Save.
- “Your trip” (the journey step by step — walks, buses, trains — only when live travel times are on): your Home and the place you go to, rounded to about 10 metres so the right bus stop is found, and the time you need to arrive, go to WakeFlow’s server, which asks Google Maps (Routes) for the route. Neither WakeFlow nor its server stores them. “Open in Google Maps” opens Google’s own app or site, where Google’s privacy policy applies.
- Speaking instead of typing (the microphone button): Android’s own speech recognition (on most phones, Google’s) turns your voice into text and gives WakeFlow only the text. WakeFlow never records or receives audio and has no microphone permission.
- Natural voice (if you choose it): the text of your summary goes through WakeFlow’s server to Google Cloud Text-to-Speech (in Europe) to be turned into speech. Otherwise your phone’s own voice reads it, on the phone.
- Weather: an approximate location (rounded to about 10 km) and the time, to Open-Meteo, to get the forecast. Nothing else is sent.
- Live traffic and "Adjust for traffic & weather" (both off by default; the second is set per alarm): your Home and destination, rounded to about 100 m, and your departure time go through WakeFlow’s server to a routing service (TomTom, or Google Maps) to get today’s travel time, and an approximate location (about 10 km) goes to Open-Meteo for the weather — 60 minutes before the alarm, from your phone. Not stored.
- Maps: while you pick a place, map images are loaded from OpenStreetMap, which sees which area of the map is shown.
- WakeFlow Pro: you pay through Google Play — WakeFlow never sees your card or payment details. To check that a subscription is real, the app sends the purchase token Google gives it to WakeFlow’s server, which asks Google whether it is active and until when. The token is also sent with AI and trip requests so Pro gets higher daily limits. Not linked to your name; checks are kept in memory for a few hours only.
- Public holidays: your country code (for example "BE") to Nager.Date, to know which days to skip.
- Message a friend: by default your phone opens a ready-to-send text and nothing is sent without your tap. Only when WakeFlow’s server offers automatic texts and you choose them, your friend’s number and your message go to the server, which texts them through an SMS provider if you don’t get up, and deletes them once the morning is over.
- Reporting an AI answer: if you report an AI answer, the reported text, the kind of feature and your reason are stored on WakeFlow’s server so we can review and improve it. They are deleted after review, and at the latest after 12 months.
WakeFlow’s server and service providers
- WakeFlow’s server runs on Google Cloud in Belgium (Europe). Like any website, it receives your IP address to answer a request. Our server keeps the IP address only in memory for about one minute, to stop abuse (rate limiting), and does not log the content you send.
- An anonymous device ID: a random number the app makes once, sent with AI requests so the server can limit how often one phone uses AI (fair use). It contains no name or phone number, isn’t linked to you, and the server only counts it for the current day.
- Service providers used for the features above: Google Cloud (AI text with Gemini and the natural voice, Europe), Google Maps Platform (routes and “Your trip”, only if turned on), Open-Meteo (weather), OpenStreetMap (map images), Nager.Date (public holidays), Google Play (payments for WakeFlow Pro), TomTom or Google Maps (live traffic, only if turned on), and an SMS provider (automatic friend texts, only if available and turned on). They receive only what is listed above and may use it only to provide their service.
- Google Play delivers the app and its updates; Google’s own privacy policy applies to that. WakeFlow does not include advertising or analytics tools.
How long data is kept
- On your phone: until you delete it in the app, delete all your data, or uninstall WakeFlow. Overnight notifications: at most 24 hours.
- AI, voice, weather, traffic, maps and holiday requests: not stored by WakeFlow — only used to answer the request.
- Automatic friend text: until the morning is over. Reported AI answers: until reviewed, at most 12 months. IP addresses on our server: about one minute.
Why we may use your data (legal basis)
- Your consent: for the optional features — AI, natural voice, notification access, calendar, location, usage access, live traffic and friend texts. You can withdraw it at any time by turning the feature off.
- Providing the service you asked for: running your alarms on your phone.
- Our legitimate interest: keeping the server secure and free from abuse (short-lived IP addresses) and reviewing reported AI answers.
Your rights and choices
- Every optional feature and permission can be turned off in Settings or in Android’s settings; the app keeps working.
- Export all your data or delete all of it in Settings → Privacy & backup. Uninstalling WakeFlow also deletes everything on your phone.
- Under data protection law (including the EU GDPR) you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the use of your data, to receive it in a portable form, and to withdraw consent. Because almost everything stays on your phone, you can do most of this yourself in the app; for anything held on our server, contact us.
- You can also complain to a data protection authority — in Belgium, the Data Protection Authority (dataprotectionauthority.be) — or the one where you live.
Data outside your country
AI text and the natural voice are processed by Google Cloud in Europe (Belgium), like WakeFlow’s server. Some other providers listed above — for example Google Maps and Google Play — may process a request outside your country, protected by their data protection terms (such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses).
Security
All connections use HTTPS. Data on your phone is kept in the app’s private storage, protected by Android. The server accepts requests only from the WakeFlow app and limits how many each device can make. No method is 100% secure, but we keep what leaves your phone to the minimum.
Children
WakeFlow is meant for adults and is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has used a feature that sends data, contact us and we will delete anything held on our server.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes, we update this page and its date, and the app shows the new version. For questions or requests about your data, use "Send feedback" in Settings, or the contact email on WakeFlow’s Google Play page.
